No. 18 at The Fortress, Frankenmuth |
Here is a shot I had the opportunity to play after my drive on No. 18 at The Fortress in Frankenmuth went errant to the left. I love a challenge, but this was my first actual baseball swing with a golf club. As you might imagine, it went awesome 😂 Got a photo or a story from a course you’ve played? Text or email it to 248-705-4386 or jay@gpcgolf.com. |

Gregory Schink | Ask Gregory Schink how golf and his day job overlap and the answers come quickly. In wealth management, every day is different. In golf, you never know what the next shot is going to hold. In both, the best move is usually the same: stay in the moment, keep your emotions in check, and focus on what is right in front of you. A Gregor member since December, Gregory is a lifelong golfer, a serious student, and a curious mind who found time to build his own golf app along the way. |
9 Age he started | 10 Years away | 100 Rounds a year since |
A Golfer Since Nine, With a Ten-Year Intermission
Gregory’s golf story starts around age nine at Greenville Country Club, a nine-hole course outside Grand Rapids where his parents were members. He learned on oversized persimmon woods handed down by someone else, and one of his earliest golf memories is picking a quarter up off the green and getting scolded for it by a scratch golfer. He thought he had struck it rich.
In high school, football was not an option, so golf became the thing. He taught himself, no lessons, playing anywhere from nine to 27 holes almost every day of the summer, with a cheeseburger and a Fresca waiting at the turn. He made the varsity team as a freshman and kept playing in college. Then his car was stolen in Detroit with his clubs inside, and he walked away from the game for about ten years.
In 2016, he picked up a new set and never looked back, playing around 125 rounds the very next year and roughly 100 a year since. Even his orthopedic surgeon is on board, recommending golf for the rotation, the fine-twitch muscles, and the long-term benefits for the body.
| “It’s one of those things you can do with your friends, you can do for business. It fits my lifestyle, and what I like to do outside of work.” |
Finding Gregor
The curved-screen bays at Gregor. | Before Gregor, Gregory and his friends were using Topgolf, which was fun but ran its course: a bit of a novelty, not very realistic, and expensive. One weekend he went looking for an open simulator bay, found everything booked, and Gregor popped up. He and a friend came by to check it out, and it happened to be a blizzard. Jay was running late and left them waiting outside, but the conversation started like it was with an old friend, and they joined on the spot. |
What sold him: it is close to home (Berkley and Royal Oak are right around the corner), the price made sense, you can bring your own food and drinks, and the 24-hour access fits a schedule that is anything but 9 to 5. He called about five friends right away to tell them to get in before it filled up.
These days it is part practice facility, part rainy-day backup, and part a place to hit a bucket of range balls when he wants something different. Hilary, who has come to love it too, says the privacy of the bays is a big part of the appeal and that the practice is helping her game. Some days they have the place to themselves to chip and putt, and other days they jump into a pickup game.
Staying Level, on the Course and in the Market
Gregory started in finance in 2006 on the west side of the state before moving east. His education path covers a lot of college football rivalries: the University of Miami in Florida to start, then Central Michigan for his bachelor’s degree and MBA, a PhD from Kansas State, and most recently a master of science from Duke. The original plan was law school. He gave it a try at Michigan State, decided it was not the right fit, and fell back on finance, which he describes as a grind that worked out. He has worked at some of the top firms on Wall Street and today works in wealth management.
| “Every day is different. Sort of like golf, you never know what the next shot is going to hold, nor the next day in the market.” |
The overlap shows up in how he talks about his work. One piece of advice he repeats often: don’t watch the news too much. It echoes what he tells himself on the course. Don’t get too emotional, don’t get too worked up, and try not to read too much into things. Golf, like financial planning, is a marathon. You cannot think about the next mile, the next hole, or the next shot. You keep the whole 18 holes, or the whole 20 years to retirement, in view and focus on what can be controlled right now.
He brings that same mindset to the events he organizes. Recently he pulled together a downtown evening that put wealth advisors from a number of different firms in the same room, a lot of planning that paid off in a really informative night. The next one is planned for March or April, and he is thinking about timing it around the Masters, with a watch party to follow.
Plain Language, Please
Both golf and finance come with plenty of jargon, and Gregory has seen the glazed-over look in each. Tell a newcomer to hit a hooded seven iron, or walk someone through a stock’s alpha and beta, and you get the same polite nod. His approach to both: keep it simple, bring people up to speed at their own pace, and point them toward the lessons and courses that can help. It takes decades to get comfortable in either world, golf probably a little longer than finance.
Curious About AI
Gregory has been paying close attention to AI, and he is firmly in the camp that says everyone needs to learn it. In his words, Pandora’s box is open, so you can embrace it or not. He has put it to work in a very Gregory way: he built an Android app in his spare time for a small tracker, the kind you would clip to a key fob or a bag, and turned it into a ball marker. With it in his pocket, his music turns up when he walks away from the cart and turns back down when he returns, all based on proximity. No plans to make money from it. It was fun, and it works for him.
His view on AI is practical. It is a complement, not a substitute, and he cautions against going too far down the rabbit hole. Treat it as a rough draft: trust, but verify. He is also the one who introduced Jay to the AI voice recorder that captured this very interview.
From Cobble Beach to the Local Muni
Gregory is not currently a member of a country club, which means he plays whatever is open, and that changes year to year: Royal Oak, Detroit Golf Club, Rackham, wherever someone is taking him out. A fall favorite closer to home is Majestic in Commerce. The course that surprised him most, though, was north of the border at Cobble Beach on Georgian Bay in Ontario (the photo on this issue’s cover). He calls it the most difficult course he has ever played, tougher than anything he saw in Scotland. It was after Labor Day, so the course was out of season and they barely saw another soul. A stay in one of the main suites, with golf for two and breakfast included, ran about $800.

Gregor’s Signature Question Every member spotlight closes with the same question: something completely unimportant you have a ridiculously strong opinion about. Gregory’s answer: his golf playlist. He listens to nearly the same songs every round and treats music like a pre-shot routine. By adjusting the beats per minute, he can bring his energy up or down and manage his emotions on the course, to the point that he sometimes prefers to ride alone. (This is, of course, the same man who built an app to control his music by walking away from the cart.) “It’s just like golf. You need your warmups, and you need to have the same drill before every shot.” The repetition does not always win fans among playing partners, but he is not budging. |
| Club Standards |
Respect the club.
The Gregor is an unmanned, 24/7 space, and it only works because members take care of it. Cameras are in place throughout the club. Altering, damaging, or destroying anything in the club is not tolerated. Damage to the club is the member’s responsibility, including damage caused by the member’s guests. |
| Everyday Care |
Marked balls and sharp tees like these are a no-go on the sims. | Gregor Balls and Tees Only Please use only the golf balls and tees provided at the club in the sim bays, no outside balls or tees. Dirty or marked-up balls and sharp tees can damage the impact screens, and I do my best to keep them in great shape for everyone. Clean Your Clubs Fall means wetter, tougher conditions on the course. If you are coming straight from a round, please clean your clubs in the provided cleaners before hitting in a bay. Check Your Shoes The same goes for shoes. If yours are carrying mud, grass, or other debris, knock it off before stepping onto the turf. |

I know everyone does their best on this, and I just like to send a little reminder here and there to keep it going.
